As part of a Java update I accidentally accepted JfileManager and ScanTack. I have tried to remove them both from Control Panel Add/Remove programs, but this was not successful, and although I can see the programs on my Programs file, they have both disappeared from the list of installed programs. Without rebuilding my pc from scratch - and reloading all of the progams - how can I get rid of these nasty little programs

Try reinstalling Malwarebytes Antimalware and run a full system can. You might also want to run a scan with HitmanPro (download link at the bottom of the top spyware removers list), it could find some infections that Malwarebytes missed.

PS. I have seen fake Java updates pushing high risk malware infection (together with adware like in your case), for example Cryptolocker, CryptoWall, CryptoDefense and various keyloggers. So you should definitely scan your computer with several antimalware programs to make sure it's clean.

thanks for your help, I tried removing the extensions from my internet browsers IE11, and Chrome, but the remove options were greyed out! I've now run a malwarebytes scan, which seems to have removed the programs, and I now can't see ScanTack in my Toolbars & Extensions list.

I'd like to run a malwarebytes scan again, but the program doesn't want to load - do you know why?

Hi Doddy, if you don't see the programs in your Add/Remove programs list you should also remove their add-ons from your Internet browsers extension lists. You could follow this removal guide to assist you in this task - https://www.pcrisk.com/removal-guides/7653-scantack-ads

After removing the extensions from your Internet browsers be sure to scan your computer with Malwarebytes Antimalware and see if it can detect anything. https://www.pcrisk.com/top-spyware-removers
